    Need Help with New Yorkie

    Hello! I've recently taken in a 3 year old Yorkie. The home he came from did not research the breed prior to obtaining him and did not anticipate his needs. They found his energy did not match their lifestyle well and the little guy was often in trouble or pushed aside. They asked me to take him. I have a 3 year old Golden. Her energy and the Yorkie's actually match pretty good.

    I've never had a Yorkie so I need some advise. What I am seeing in this guy is he's come with some issues (not a surprise really!). He's very skittish of new people. He cowers if he's made a mistake and needs a correction. He's very anxious in the car. In his old life he wasn't taken to many new places and so what I've been doing is trying to expose him to new situations in a controlled way so he learns he's not going to get hurt or in trouble. He seems to be less skittish with new people but we still have work to do.

    Is there anything specifically about Yorkies that I should be aware of that could help as we work with him to overcome his anxieties?

    Hello nanoki,

    First of all god bless you for giving the Yorkie a chance for a new home.

    I think what the Yorkie lacks is proper socialization and a bit of confidence.

    Sharda actually wrote something about socializing your dogs so I suggest that you read this first;

    Dog Obedience Training - Tips In Socializing Your Dog

    Building Your Dog's Confidence

    Lastly, Just continue to give your new Yorkie love and patience.

    I have had three yorkies so i have a some knowledge of the breed !! can i suggest you do NOT give him tinned dog food.. its full of rubbish ie do you know whats in it ? more than likely you don't !! give this a try your little yorkie will love it !! buy some breast of chicken no skin and boil it in just water for 30 mins let it cool and then finely slice it and cut it up into small pieces
    your dog will simply love it !! the chicken has a nutrient that is calming for him whilst being extremely low fat and healthy and does not cost much more than the absolute rubbish you buy in tins !! I would horrify you if i told you what was in even the top dog foods which you buy in supermarkets !! also fry a little of your meat in virgin olive oil they will love this too but only introduce this very carefully at first but its so good for them !! my first yorkie lived to he was 19 the second till he was 17 so i must have been doing something right !! hope this helps !! x

    I was trying to find some type of different food for my 6 yr old Yorkie and I read your post. I love the idea of boiling chicken, but would I need to give him something else in additional to the chicken? Currently, he will only eat the Purina soft beef (which is not that good for him) and I also give him canned Merrick's chicken wings and veggies. Sometimes he eat it, most times he does not. I've tried so many other foods and I made one of the recipes Sharda suggested. He ate it for a little while and then stopped. Thanks.

    Hi dchesley,

    I have 2 Yorkies, one just turned 2 and my baby is 10 months. They get no canned food or any table scraps. I feed Blue Buffalo Lamb and Brown Rice dry. Puppy/chicken and Adult/ Lamb. Boiling that chicken is very good, I do that also. If you want to add a a little variety to your little guys diet and see what he will accept try this, my Golden had a upset stomach and my vet said give a very bland diet, brown rice and, boiled in water chicken or hamburger, drain the hamburger and rinse in water, "no oil" and scrambled eggs also with no oil and cottage cheese.

    I would introduce this slowly so you know what he likes.

    Good Luck to you. Mia
