    Sneezing poodle doggie

I recently adopted a poodle from a local shelter. On our way home she was sneezing and I thought it was because she had been in a cage for several days at shelter. I was told that she is 5 years old.

The sneezing continued and she also has some really bad fits of something that sounds like asthma; she is unable to breathe and makes this choking sound with body spasms. I do not know what to do. she has been to vet and she got antiobiotics, an antihistamine and some other meds for the fits. the vet said she was about two years old. She eats and drinks water and is otherwise healthy but the sneezing and fits have me very worried.

I had previously owned another poodle, given to me when she was a baby and lived to be 14 but she was rarely sick during her life.

If anyone knows what this could be and has any more information about this condition, please let me know.

    thank you.

I don't know what you mean by "she has fits" Does she have seizures? Her constant sneezing could be really bad allergies, but she's been to the vet and the vet didn't say anything about it. What I would do besides get a 2nd opinion is change her food. It could also be kennel cough which is a bad respiratory infection, which is probably why she is on antibiotics. The antibiotics should kick in quickly and begin working, and she should feel better right away.

You never said how long it's been that she's been on medication. If it's more than a week and she is still not feeling well, take her back to the Vet and tell him that the medication is not working, and she is not getting better.

I did a search for you on the internet and here is an article about why dogs may sneeze.

Canine Sneezing - A Look at Common Causes of Dog Sneezing

I would strongly suggest you take the dog back to the vet...

I wish you both well, and I pray the dog gets healthy and happy.

    Sneezing doggie

Sarah, thank you for the site - it was very helpful. From the site's inf., it seems to be a bad upper respiratory infection.

Besides the sneezing, my doggie has "attacks" that sound like human asthma. She is now on two new meds - prednisone and aminophilline which hopefully will help.

My other pets were given to me when they were puppies; so I did not know that they could get this type of infection.

    Hi Maritza,

That is why I am so happy that Sharda and Jude started this site, we can all get together and talk about whatever our concerns are. Thanks guys, Our pets are so much a part of our life, they are like children.

Yes I would also take my little girl back to the Vet and get the kennel cough shot and also put her on a holistic food like Blue Buffalo Lamb and rice. Sure worked for me.

    Good Luck.

    Mia

Definitely....ALWAYS take your dog to the Vet when something does not appear normal.

Yawning and Scratching are displacement activities. Similarly, Sneezing can also be related to stress and anxiety. Insecure dogs often sneeze when meeting another dog or greeting a human.
Just something to remember when out with your dog on a walk or whatever.

However....always contact your Vet when you have questions.

    Hi Maritza!
We have 3 Bichons, and our female has done this since she was a puppy, and she is 8 years old now. Our Vet said it was called "reverse sneezing", and it does sound just like a bad asthma attack. There really isn't anything you can do to correct it. We just go to her and gently rub her throat and talk softly to her until she stops. I sometimes also gently rub her chest. Hope this helps a little.

Yes MaryAnn, Thank You, I never knew that either. This morning at 5 AM I was awake and sneezed twice and my Chi came out from under the covers and sneezed also, made my laugh, that must have been something coming in the window, I always keep my window open a bit. I just ordered some really nice harnesses for my little ones, I don't like collars for them because of the trachea collapse thing on these little ones.

    Have a great day everyone.

    Mia

Actictuch I know you understand English so I don't worry about whether or not you understand. This forum is about information regarding dogs, not the type of information you have provided... I have contacted the Administrator, to delete your message.

We here in the forum would appreciate it if you would respect the rules, or simply leave..
