I have 2 papillons born April and May 2010 (they have the same father). All of the dogs I've had in my life I've never had any medical problems when they were young. Toby had bilateral inguinal hernias and his BUN is elevated. Currenly, his creatnine is in normal range. Tomy, his brother, has an abdominal hernia and his blood sugar was only 55 the evening I had his preop blood work drawn. Toby's hernias are fixed and Tomy has his surgery this Monday. My question is: Does this run in papillons. I've looked online and haven't really seen any history in this regard. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Pam nice to meet you. I'm sorry to hear about all the problems you are having with your Papillons. I have found, however, an excerpt from a book, on google books regarding the common diseases in Papillons. According the excerpt, yes inguinal hernias are common...

Hi Pam
I checked two sources . Medical and Genetic Aspects of Pure Bred Dogs . This book is used by VIP Pet insurance . The list 4 problems Patellar Luxation (knee cap ), Entropian (inward rolling eyelids ), deafness and Anasarca (you will never see this it occurs at birth ).
The other is online www.doggedhealth.com | Diseases & Symptoms | Breed by Breed Health It includes a few additional. Neither mentions inguinal hernias however Silky Terriers (my breed ) can get them and it is not mentioned either. I have never had any problem with the hernia and just have it repaired when they are spayed at 7 months , I see the very infrequently and they quite often correct as the puppy ages . I sold a puppy reduced in price to compensate for the additional cost of surgery and when it was done the hernia had disapeared. The fact that the father is the same I would bet it was passed on. Also see if mom has a similar line (cousin 1/2 sister to the male )
