Question Too late to potty train?

We have two cockapoo puppies, George and Gracie, just 5 months old. We have had them for two months. We crated them at night and they slept from 8pm to 7am from day one. We take them out each morning and they poo and pee immediately. Then we come back in. They play awhile, eat, and go out again. I have them confined to the kitchen area. Most of the time, I get them out every two hours or less. But they still sneak a poo (which they then EAT! yuk) or pee under the kitchen table. I was allowing them also in the dining room, but they used that as their toilet so we locked them in the kitchen. If we let them play with us in the living room, one or both will make in here.

We have a large yard where they also love to play and wrestle. I reward them with a treat every time they make outside and they expect it. Sometimes, I am out with them for an hour or so, we come in, and before I turn my back, someone has peed in the kitchen.

Today, after their post-breakfast outing, I put them in the crate. I'll leave them there for two hours and then take them out again. Some things I read tell me I let them "roam" too soon. I clean up their messes without a word and spray that special no-odor stuff. If I catch them making in the house, I say "Bad dog!" and they know they were wrong. But it doesn't connect. ANY ADVICE?
