What to expect of a new puppy at 4 months..

I am getting a new puppy in 8 weeks. She will be 4 months old when I am scheduled for a 3 week vacation. She will be house-broken and socialized by then. She will be going to our dog sitter's home (our sitter is very caring and we have used her many times in the past with our adult dog, now deceased) where there is another friendly dog. What difficulties or problems might there be for our dog sitter? Will there be difficulty returning my new puppy home after I return from my trip?

    hello and welcome rich28!

I've never left my dog with a sitter before so I'm a bit of a loss.

The only problem, I think, that your sitter will have is the whole potty and poopy process.

But if you can potty train your puppy in that amount of time I really don't see any other problem since

your sitter is already experienced in dealing with dogs.

Couldn't she just remain at the Breeder's home for an additional three weeks? She will be familar in that setting. There is a much smaller percentage of her regressing.

A lot of reputable breeders will not let the puppy be picked up before 12 weeks anyway.

Good idea. We will take our puppy home for 2 months for bonding with us, housebreaking, and vet checkups; then we will return her to the breeder's care during the time we are away.
    Thanks for your thoughts.

Glad to help. Enjoy your new addition, and be sure to take lots and lots of pictures. Like children, they grow up and change so quickly. I have recently filled up my 6th photo album (300 photos per album), and my dog just turned two years old.

hello I've moved this thread in the puppy section so that others can also see this topic properly.

    I hope you don't mind

The puppy is going to be 4 months old when they go on vacation. Do you really think a breeder is going to watch this puppy?

No way is a breeder going to take a puppy that you have had for 3 months and watch while you are on vacation. The person that replied to you made it sound like the puppy was only 12 weeks old! 4 weeks over the age you were going to take it!

Dutchie.... If you get a puppy from a reputable Breeder / Kennel......YES! They will board it (If they bred it - they will board it) at any age.

And...I understood perfectly what Rich28 was stating.

Yes MaryAnn I totally agree with you. Also if they are reputable and for some reason the puppy is not working out with your family they will take it back, although once I had the puppy there is no way they would get it back.
