The Terrible Case Of Puppy Strangles

    Hello guys!

I just heard of this condition called puppy strangles from Sharda a little while ago. This is certainly the first time I've ever heard of it.

This is a condition that can affect a puppy 3 - 4 months old and according to my research there is no way to prevent this condition, it just happens.

This condition is is a pustular and crusting dermatitis or skin inflammation that occurs in puppies less than three to four months of age. Pustules are usually present on the muzzle, inside the ear and on the lip margins.

Swelling of the muzzle may be severe. The wounds begin draining after a few days and are replaced by scabs. Many dogs also develop swollen lymph nodes.

The only way to cure this condition is by giving your pup high doses of steroids and such as prednisone and antibiotics as coverage to prevent development of secondary bacterial infections.

Also, puppies that have this condition will sometimes feel depressed and may have a fever and joint pain. This condition is not a bacterial infection but more a type of hypersensitivity or immune dysfunction.

If you've heard of this condition before or have any experience about this please don't be shy and post so we can have a broader grasp and understanding about this condition.

This sounds to me like it's an auto immune disease, with all the inflammations going on within the body. I would seriously watch the white blood count, as well as the red blood count. I've never heard of it either, but poor puppies it sounds painful.

Apparently they don't understand why it occurs, and it seems as if dachshund and golden retrievers are predisposed, per family history.

Here's an article I found about the condition Puppy Strangles

Giving high does of steroids and antibiotics can also cause ulcers in the intestinal tract, and kidney problems.

In these particular cases, where a puppy is so young, I would start them off right away with supplements to counter act all the western medicine. I would certain begin giving them Nutritional yeast.

Yes, Sarah you're right about the steroids which is what worries me. I believe puppies are simply
too young to be given high dosages of steroids.

Although supplements and the magic yeast would really help Sarah according to some sources there
is no way to prevent this condition. It just happens to puppies 3 - 4 months old which is really sad.

It's not for prevention, it's to help to not deplete their immune system.. Just like having any other immune disease or cancer, supplements to continuously build and rebuild the immune system makes things easier. An immune system depletes the minerals, amino acids vitamins etc that the body needs to keep fighting, otherwise the illness makes the body weaker for other things to occur.

Just my experience with my mom who died of cancer, Buddy who died of cancer, and me with MS. I've done a lot of research on these things... A body which is depleted of all that is good, makes it tough even for the strongest, let alone young pups or children.
