pooing in crate
Hi every one. I need help. I have a new 14 week old yorkie, layla, she is a very good puppy except I can't get her to poo on the pee pad. The first day I brought her home from the breeder she peed and pooed on the pad but since then she has been going where she sleeps. Originally i bought her a cute bed and found out that she would pee on the pad but poo in the bed, then i bought her the crate and today i came home she did the same thing she pooed in the crate but peed on the pad. I was always told that animals or dogs will never go to the bathroom where they sleep but she has no problem sleeping in the crate or bed with poo. Please help.

Hi srpringle1127,
You will need to have a lot of patience, your baby is still very young. How long do you leave her alone? She will have to get on a 2/3 hour schedule to go potty, and also how big is the crate? She will just need a small one to sleep in and she will not mess it. If it is a large one, section it off so she only has a soft Towel or blanket to sleep on with what ever you have available, I used a small cardboard box to keep my baby in the small plastic kennel area and I had the kennel on my bed and she never messed, which is remarkable because I got her at 7 weeks. I tried the pad training and she said No Way, she has always gone outdoors even in a Blizzard.
Good luck and don't worry too much, they all get potty trained sooner or later if you persist.
Have fun.

I actually bought a crate with a divider and i gave her enough room to where she can turn around. I think the problem might be putting her on a schedule, like you said. I am not home for long hours sometime so i leave out food, so I think I am gonna feed her twice a day and see how that works. Once in the mornings before i leave and in the afternoon when i get home. What do you think. Thanks for your help.

Hi again,
If you work all day, I have a better idea. Petco has these Precision Pet Products wire pens, 4x4 is what I have. I have several so if I have to be gone all day, I lay down a washable pad that I ordered from EZ-WHELP.com and then put the normal disposable pads down on that. Then you can put your little baby in that and you will have no mess. After she is a bit older you can go in the cat department and get her a little covered hut or 2, My girls absolutely love them to sleep in or escape for a nap. Do you believe this I have 3 Chi's and a Yorkie that think they are cats............
I love your puppies name, that is so sweet. Where are you located?
Take care and keep us posted.

Thank You again for your advice. We are located in Columbia, SC. Wow u have 4 little ones. I tried something new last night. I laid out 2 pee pads and she peed on one and pooed on the other but this morning I woke up she pooed in the crate again. So i know she is capable of going on the pad.

Hi again,
Where is the crate? Is it in your bedroom? My yorkie sleeps next to me in bed and if I get up in the night I take her to the pen with the pad so she can go if she needs to, No Way am am I taking her outside in the dark, too creepy and we have Mountain Lions here in ND. If you had a small plastic kennel for her to sleep in with just enough room to stretch out and be comfortable I don't think she would mess it up. Or another option is to block part of that crate so she only has a very small area. Normally they will not go in their sleeping area.
Hang in there, she will get trained, and you are going to have so much fun and get so many Ohhhh's and Awwww's when you take her out and about.

It may take time and patience on your part but it sounds like she knows what the pads are for so she will learn to use them.

If you leave food out all day long, she will need to go potty more, and it will be harder to get her into a routine. Once you control access to food, eliminations will become much more regular. Regardless of how many times a day you feed your dog, leave the food down for 20 minutes only. If she doesn't eat it all by the end of that time, pick it up and do not offer any more until the next feed. She will learn that she has to eat her food when you put it down for her.

I have the crate with the divider and I give her just enough room to where she can turn around. No I do not have her with me in the room ,I don't want her to be afraid to be by her self because she has to be by herself alot during the day. She has been doing better on the pad. She is peeing on the pad more often and today she pooed on the pad and I jumped around the room like a crazy women and gave her a treat so hopefully she keeps it up.

I am not home sometimes for long hours so I really do not feel comfortble not leaving out food right now. I think when she gets a little older I will feel more comfortable about keeping her on a strick schedule. Hopefully it doesn't back fire. Thank You for your advice.

Well that is great, I guess she has the idea now. I do the same, "good potty" when I take my baby Yorkie out with my older Chi and then when I say that my Chi knows Mika went and she has to search it out and try to cover it if she has a dribble left. Our potty is really a production to get it done, but that is Ok it is still summer,
