In Memory of Buddy June 1998- July 2006

Buddy was a Rottweiler rescue. The other Rotties I had were working dogs, primarily service protected dogs, so I know how mean they can be. I went to a local shelter asking if they had a Rottie, because Lucy had to be put to sleep due to cancer. I was looking really for a puppy. All they had was this one year old they had rescued from an abusive home. I was looking for a female, not a male. He was due to be put down the following day if no one took him. Well, that tugged on my heart. He was rough, no training, but I took him. I didn't want him trained as a service protected dog, I wanted to see what a Rottweiler was like as a dog, a pet.

I believe that the pets we get are the ones we need. I also believe that our pets are also our teachers for what we need to learn in life, not matter what it is. Buddy loved everyone, [just like me], and he thought that everyone should love him [just like me]. He was a natural protector, and what I mean by this, is that if we were in public he would place his back to me and watch the crowd.
If there was someone who he didn't trust, he would place himself between us.
Buddy taught me to be cautious of people, not to be so trusting.

Buddy, taught me that beauty was in the inside. Buddy's cancer was on his face, and before he got worse and could no longer walk, he was always excited about going for his walks in the morning and at night. He didn't look so pretty to look at, but he didn't know that, all he knew was that the he was loved.

It's difficult to bring closure when our pet passes on, but what I have found helped was writing a Eulogy. I know it sounds silly, but it really isn't. It provides an opportunity for you as the owner to review your pets life, and all the goodness they bring to us.

I still haven't replaced Buddy with another dog, but hopefully soon, I will be able to.

    Thanks for listening

    Sarah

Sarah, Buddy sounds like he was a very special dog. I took your suggestion and wrote a eulogy for my dog Bogie and I think it really help me so "thank you." It helped me to remember he good qualities and funny incidents with him and put the final illness in more perspective.

Aww Karmapug I'm so glad you took my advice and wrote a eulogy in Bogie's honour. Now frame it as if it was a picture and hang it somewhere.

Buddy was special. We had a connection that I never had with any other dog I owned, and I loved every one of my dogs. Buddy weighed 130 pounds and went most places with me. I trained him to go down the slide with my nephew and ride the merry go round with him. Buddy would do anything for me. I think that is why it's difficult for me to get another dog yet. I keep saying soon, but I'm not ready. I'm also thinking about getting a different breed for awhile, because I don't want to compare. But I know eventually I will get another Rottweiler.

I hope you keep feeling better karmapug and if you feel like crying, just let it happen.

    Take care
