We all know that grooming can either be a good experience or a not so good experience, especially if it's your dog's first time to be groomed.
It can be a bit messy and stressful in the beginning but importantly the first few times that you groom your dog will be the moments or the times when your dog will associate the experience as something fun or as something really traumatizing.
But just because your dog's first grooming experiences are a little negative doesn't mean that you can't do anything about it though. It's never too late!
Here are some of the things that you could do to make grooming something that your dog can look forward to.
* Start by thinking positively
This is important because if you, yourself is afraid or is doubtful about the whole grooming experience then it's certainly something that you can rub off your dogs. So before grooming it's important that you think of happy thoughts and be positive that you'll both have fun with the activity.
* Start grooming when they're young
It's better if you help your dogs get used to the whole sensation of grooming. It's best if you start grooming when your dog is still a puppy. Starting them to be groomed young will not only help them get accustomed to the whole process but it will also be an easier task for you to do.
Imagine trying to groom an adult German Shepherd or other large dogs for the first time.
* Make grooming a regular activity
To help your dog get accustomed with the whole experience it would help if you make it a regular activity that you can do together.
* Choose the right grooming tools
Before buying the tools you need, it's suggested that you do your homework and choose the right grooming tools for your dogs. Remember dog grooming tools can vary for each dog breed.
* Be careful
It's always important to take grooming slowly and be careful especially when you're dealing with puppies. You don't want your dog to associate grooming as a painful and very scary experience. It's also suggested to have a first aid kit nearby especially when you're clipping the nails.
* Make it FUN!
Simply make grooming a fun experience for your dog. Bring treats, talk to your dog when grooming, etc. Make it an activity that can help you and your dog bond.
* Finds some helpful resources
Reading can really make a lot of difference no matter what you want to. You can visit the library or search the internet for some books or articles.
Consider a good Dog Grooming ebook that can provide a step-by-step guide to grooming your dog. One helpful grooming ebook is called The Secrets to Easy Dog Grooming. It talks about the different types of dog grooming tools, brushing, bathing, cutting hair, managing matts and shedding, brushing your dog's teeth and much more.
Also take into consideration the fact that some dogs may be fearful of difficult than others. Simply be more patient and just help your dog get over his/her fear and show her how fun grooming is.
