    Feeding my orphan puppy

    Good day

For my first post I have a happy/sad story.

On Dec. 20, my bitch had to go through a cesarean three puppies were dead but the fourth one lived. Kane was fine for a week and suddenly was very, very bad she vomited all night so at 3:00 AM I called the vet. He told us what to do during the night and to be at the clinic first thing in the morning. That day they gave her serum, the next she passed an ultrasound scan and was operated for peritonitis but the vet also had to take away the uterus and the ovaries. Two days later she died.

Now I am giving loving care to the orphan puppy. My problem is that I really don't know if I am feeding him right. After all I read after Kane’s death I don’t want to give commercial puppy food.

He now weighs 1,025 kg or, 2,2 lbs.

Apart from the commercial puppy formula 4 times a day which totals 200 cal aprox., I feed him a chicken vegetable pâté in the morning. He is steadily gaining weight.

    Chicken Vegetable Pâté

    4 cups stewed chicken
    2 cups frozen string beans
    2 cups carrots
    4 cups green cabbage
    4 cups brown rice

The RDA% is for humans, please don't take it into consideration.

How much and how many times should I give him the chicken?
Is this a healthy recipe for him?

Another thing, if I put the milk in a bowl he hardly drinks but he drinks fine from the bottle and has no problems eating the chicken
Should I just keep on feeding him with the bottle or put the milk in a bowl and wait for him to drink?

    Thank you

The only thing I would change would be the cabbage, as it might be difficult for the puppy to digest. I would also add some lean ground meat in the mix.. When the puppy gets a little older, you can give him baby carrots as treats, instead the store bought ones.

I fed mine warmed can milk until 8 weeks old, then weaned him to water. depending on how old the puppy is, I would keep him on formula but wean him from the bottle to a bowl. He does need to learn to drink eventually....
