A solution many professional dog trainers recommend, although they are not generally in favor of using "quick-fix" equipment, is the 'NO-PULL HARNESS' for curing a persistent pulling problem. Unlike normal harnesses, the leash is attached to the harness just behind the dog's neck, rather than at the back. Two straps, padded to prevent chafing, wrap around the legs. When the dog pulls forward, he feels as if he is being lifted off the ground, and so he stops.
There is also what is called a 'GENTLE LEADER' . Gentle leaders work in the same way as a halter does on a horse. Once a horse is wearing a halter, it can be led around very easily because you have control of its head. The gentle leader consists of a nose loop that is designed to fit snugly, but not too tightly, around the muzzle, and a neck strap that attaches behind the ears at the top of the neck. The leash is attached to a loop under the chin or to a loop at the side. Instead of leading the dog by the neck, you lead him by his head. Wherever the head goes, the rest of the body will follow.
The gentle leader is not a muzzle....your dog should be able to pant, bite, vomit, take treats, and drink water with it on. A gentle leader does not put any pressure on a dog's sensitive neck. There is no yanking involved. The dog simply cannot pull. As soon as the dog pulls forward, the head automatically comes to the side. When using the gentle leader remember to never jerk on it or make any other kind of leash correction, jerking could hurt the dog's head.
