Getting Ready for a Road Trip

We have a Westie that will be two in May and are planning a trip from Ohio to Florida the end of this month. We are going to be gone for about two weeks and can't stand the thought of being away from her that long. She does fine in the car for half hour to an hour trip but that's the longest trip she's taken in a car. Does anyone have any tips on how to start preparing her for the trip in the car and staying in hotels? Also is anyone aware a particular hotel chain that is pet friendly.

Hi Carol, you shouldn't have any problems with your dog on your trip at all. You will be stopping for breaks on the way, just make sure she gets water and a potty break and she'll be fine.

    Motel 6 allows pets.

I would think an hourlong ride would be enough to see how she will react on a longer trip. Our dogs can ride for hours and never tire of it, we just did an 11,000 mile cross country trip, over 2 months (that's over 14 dog months!!!). Bring a favorite blanket or toy and a few dog chews, in case she gets bored. Don't forget water and a dish for travel. Also, Google "pet friendly motels" or go to:

BTW, I grew up in Canfield, Ohio......

    Hello Carol,

Road trips are fun but as Sarah said, just make sure that you have breaks and clean water.

Also, I've heard from a friend that sometimes trips can be a little stressful for dogs so just to help your
dog with the traveling you should also bring a water mixed with a little bit of sugar.

Be sure to secure your dog either in a harness that buckles directly into the seat belt buckle of your back seat...or in a crate / kennel.
