    The "DANGER" command

    Sharda,

I love your news letter. I want to tell you about a command that I have taugh all of my dogs over the years. Of all the commands, it has been the most useful, I believe. The "sit" and "stay" are all well and good but this one can save lives. It is the word "DANGER". It sounds like no other word and it warns dogs about eating a stick that could splinter, another dog who might attack, a car coming down the street, backing up you car in the driveway, eating something outside which is poison, a stranger driving slowly by etc....You get the picture. I have two standard poodles and a 4# yorkie and this command is essential for him. He loves everyone one and all dogs etc but he could also end up easily injured by others. As soon as I tell him "danger" he runs to me for safety. It really works and I have taught lots of people about it.

People wonder how you teach it. Repetition, of course. On a walk, a car drives by, tell the dog "danger". You approach another larger dog, tell the dog danger. They start to eat something inapproriate, say danger. They learn the premise just as they do other commands.

I hope that you will share this. People tell me that they have never thought of such a command but it has saved us much misery because all of my dogs have learned. No one is prepared for when the dog sees a rabbit and starts running in pursuit and a car is approaching. The command would stop my dog in his/her tracks.

Have a good weekend and thanks for sharing. We all love our pets as family !

Cartier100: Thanks for the info, I never thought of that command but I am going to work on it, I have small dogs, Chihuahua's and a Yorkie and it sounds like they could benefit from that. Also my Golden will probably learn to be careful on our walks. She is always at my side and she handles the traffic very well but I think that command will come in handy. Thanks.

what a good idea I like the idea of 'Danger ' as a command and will have to attempt that on with Lady.
I usually tell her NO its bad especially if she is trying to pick up a slug in the garden..
    Thanks for the tip

    Great command

I'm sure some are not a fan of invisible fences, but in my situation it is better than the state highway in the front yard. Having said that, I taught my border collie the danger command while training him on the fence. Unfortunately, my call of danger was often followed by a quick shock. Needless to say the command stuck with him. While running in the woods we jumped a deer, and I was actually able to call him off the deer with the danger command.
    Thanks for mentioning It!
