    Obedience classes

I have a 13 weed old male Yorkie. Not sure if I should do obedience training classes or not. Charlie is a pretty smart puppy and catches on fast. I'm wondering if I should take the classes or if we should just train him ourselves. I'm just looking for opinions as to whether it's worth spending the money on. And if it is, what's the ideal age to start him? (I'm trying to budget everything he needs. I know pretty soon I'll have to have him neutered.)

    Thanks for any input.

Obedience classes are great, but only when the dog has had all of its shots. A reputable licenced dog trainer (do your homework first...check AKC website for trainers in your area) will not take a dog in class without documentation that he/she had all his shots, usually at around 16 weeks.

Another reason to take classes..is for the socialization part of it.

In the meantime... Yes!!! Do start training your dog immediately.... Here are 7 things your puppy should be able to do:
    1. Walk with you.
    2. Come when called
    3. Sit when asked
    4. Lie down when asked
    5. Stay when commanded
    6. Be quiet
    7. Refrain from chewing up or tearing up your clothing or furniture

Thanks. I'll be sure to make sure it's a good one. I didn't realize I needed to wait until he had all his shots.

I've just started taking my pup who is six months old and I think it's more for me than him! It's great for the socialisation aspect and made me more comfortable and confident when I take him out round other dogs.

Great!! Be sure and have your dog meet at least one new dog a week while you are out with him more. Have fun and remember to practice the skills you learn a few minutes each day, even after the class is finished.

Think of obedience as part of a health program for your dog. You wouldn't neglect your dog health wise. It is just as important for your dogs health to learn to obey. If you can do it on your own, go for it, but if you lack the patience, get a trainer it is so much easier. It's a really good start for the puppy or older dog to learn how to socialize.

Did you know you can teach your dogs sign language at the same time? It's so much fun. Teach your dog the sit command, while you are teaching this command think of a hand signal to use. When you tell your dog to sit verbally use the hand signals at the same time. Pretty soon you won't need your voice, just your hands to tell you dog what to do next.
