    Unhappy Eclampsia-please help

My bitch is breastfeeding 5 week old pups, yesterday she came to me whining i felt her shake and she was panting hot air i immediately dispensed fast acting calcium.shes fine now, i weaned the pups.im scared cause she will only eat raw meat while shes pregnant and only little bits.
Thats why i supplemented her diet with calcium.the pups were born fine.
Theyre now 5 weeks old-im terrified of it happening while shes pregnant or even soon after.what are the chances of it happening again?did i just push things to the extreme by letting her feed so long?please i need some answers.how do i prevent it?i cant make her eat dog pellets.

Feeding raw is excellent, there is no problem with that. It could be something else wrong with her. Is she producing enough milk? When feeding raw you can add supplements like Wheat Germ to her food which provides all of the amino acids she needs, I also add Nutritional yeast which gives the B vitamins. You may want to increase the number of times you feed her since you are feeding raw. Grate a carrot or cut the carrot up and and cook it until soft, add some fresh or frozen green beans, sometimes a little squash. She also needs fish, but cook it first, and I would certainly cook the chicken also. Dogs need a variety just like you.... You can add a little spinach to her food. I would buy it frozen then had half the box to her food in the morning and half in the evening.

5 weeks is ok to wean them off the mother, but they still need milk. You can purchase special dog milk, but I never did that. I buy the can milk and give them that in their food, and gradually wean them off that with their kibble.

You may also want to buy a higher quality of food, kibble[if you don't] My preference is Orijen. Add the kibble in with the raw adding more and more.

But make sure you take her in for an exam ok.

Let us know how it goes..

If I were you I would take her to the vet just for an exam and let your vet

Here is a great article regarding Eclampsia in dogs. According to the article you should never give your dog fast acting Vitamin C, as it may cause heart problems.

She never had seizures so perhaps she was hot and exhausted and the puppies were demanding, its possible it wasnt eclampsia but my paranoid mind.shes had a few bouts of panting and spring is coming here.i had a fight with my vet she wanted me to desex my dogs saying theres already too many puppies-not even giving me a chance to explain i got my permit to breed.i avoid the vet as much as possible.i give them raw chicken mince with eagle pack biscuits for pups but the mother wont eat the biscuits.i have a feeling or i hope i over reacted and it wasnt eclampsia i have often seen her panting in the past couple of weeks.she was shaved yesterday.is it safe to have another litter-her first one did fine but i gave her calcium supplements during the pregnancy.which is apparently wrong.i feed all my dogs from the same bowl except the babies, they just get scoops of meat.
Any positive advice would be good.

Ps another problem is the mother is a picky eater only eating what and when it suits her but i will mix the biscuits in with the chicken mince and see if she'll eat wheat germ.

It is not healthy nor recommended that your dog get pregnant right after she had pups. She needs to have time to recover and heal back. She should be given at least a year or 2. It sounds as if you are puppy mill, by what you are saying and I won't support that..

Given her minced chicken is fine but she needs more nutrients than that. I would certainly give her some cottage cheese mixed in with the chicken...

How old is the mother? What breed is she?

She is a picky eater, because you allow her to be. If you want to feed her raw, I applaud you for that, but do it correctly. Mix the Wheat germ in with the chicken, and sprinkle the nutritional yeast over the food. She'll eat it.

I resent you calling me a puppy mill! This dog only goes into season once a year for a start and i breed every second year!they are my pets first and foremost!im not giving you any information if youre going to insult me like that you inbred cur!

The only reason why you would get angry is if my assumptions were correct. You don't give me any more information because you are afraid that possibility I may report you... It goes to show how much information you have about your "pets", because dogs go into heat more than once a year, depending on the breed, some breads every 3-4 months.

Calling me names doesn't resolve anything, and I'm sorry you feel I was attacking you in any way, when I'm only trying to gather more information about your dog and situation. If you cared about this dog, you wouldn't hesitate to take her to the vet [as I'm sure there are many in your area] to have her examined properly to see if you are doing the right thing.

I will forward this on to the owners of the forum for their review..

She does always go into season once a year and i have witnesses to prove it.if i were running a "puppy mill" would i give a damn about their health?you just make assumptions and if theres any reporting to be done the vet would have done it! I have a lot of people behind me-and i dont like vets.i always take a witness with me when i go.you can make your assumptions with somebody who's not too sick to defend themselves.this dog only has pups once every two years and frankly-it none of your business what i do as long as its humane and legal!
