Exclamation Pug puppy with Cold, Giardia and Coccidia! Need help!

    Hello all

I just got a wonderful 15 week old Pug puppy on Saturday. He was not eating and coughing a lot so the vet gave us 2 antibiotics. He has taken then for 2 days. He will start the meds for the parasites tonight. This far he has NEVER soiled his crate and is very good about going outside but last night he pooped everywhere in his crate. Could this be because of the antibiotics and/or parasites? I am worried we took 3 steps back in his potty training...

    thanks

    Hi Allisondoc,
So sorry to hear about your little puppy. My daughter was here at the lake with her 2 Yorkies and they played in the water. A few days later she called and said her pups had diarrhea and the Giardia and were going all over too, then about 2 weeks later my other daughter was here with her German Shephard puppy and she also was in the water and yes later she got it also and had to see the Vet so I would think this is caused by the Giardia. Now my Holly, a Golden swims everyday and has not gotten it but she is 3 years old and possibly has built up an immunity to it. Be sure to keep him hydrated, my Chihuahua had diarrhea when she was a puppy and my Vet told me to get a eye dropper and give her Pedialyte.

Good luck and keep us posted.

    Mia

    Thanks Mia
I spoke to the vet-they think that the parasites are causing the diarrhea and not the antibiotics as you said. He went again in his crate last night. The vet suggested I give him a bland diet-boiled chicken and rice and avoid all treats for now. He is having his follow up on Saturday. Fingers crossed!

Yes the bland diet is about the first thing they perscribe. I talked to my daughter this afternoon and she said her German Shepard pup had the diarrhea for 3 days after she started the meds so hang in there and we all pray your little one will be back to normal soon. Do you have any idea where he picked up the Giardia?

    Take care, Mia

he is back to normal and eating regular food now, finishing up his meds. We got him at a petstore and I assume he got the giardia there...

Ok, that is great to hear. I hate to see a puppy suffer from whatever. They are so sweet and depend on us to do what we have to do to help them. Have fun with your little guy. What is his name and what color is he?

Pet stores are not the best place to buy dogs
They are very often sick and usually come from puppy mills
Cesar Milan had a great episode on puppy mills
Puppies are usually healthier and cheaper when you buy them from a breeder
I hope you have no more health problems with your little guy

Exactely Gail, I always check out the puppies in the Mall Pet Store and it just depresses me to see them there. Oprah also did a feature on Puppy Mills, It is a total disgrace that we in America have this situation going on.

Allisondoc: I hope your little guy is doing well and just having fun in his puppyness world.
