    Post Yorkies and anesthesia

Hi I have a five year old male yorkie. At our yearly visit to the vet a couple weeks ago, the vet reminded me again that it was imperative he gets his teeth cleaned and two removed. She has been telling me this for a couple years and I have been putting it off because I am really scared of putting him under anesthesia. He is only four pounds and very nervous when he goes to the vet. I have decided to do the surgery because I love him so much and I want him to be healthy! Is there anything that I should know or ask the vet before I schedule his appointment? Also, is it safe to have this procedure done and have him neutered at the same time...I wouldn't want him to go through the trauma twice?? Thanks for the help!

    Stephanie

I checked with my Vet's office and they stated it's no problem to do both at the same time. What does your vet say?

I had my Yorkie neutered and microchiped at the same time. I remember the vet said not to let him over-exert himself for 10 days and no baths for that period. My vet owns two small dogs herself, so I picked her since she likes to work with the smaller breeds. Taffy did fine. I left him at the vet' s at 7:00 a.m. and picked him up after work. I also took his own 'small wire crate' along for them to put him into after his surgery. I had washed his dog bed and blanket he keeps in the crate, but I let him sleep in that crate's bed the night before his surgery so that he would have some of his own scent on it again. The lady vet said he came through his surgery "just fine" and curled-up to sleep in his own bed in his own little crate which they placed in their "animal holding room". He drank a bit of water. He ate his dog food once he got home. My husband and I had to keep him on a leash most of the time, so that he didn't try to 'jump' on our sofa and pull his internal stitches--he's very quick! He's all well now!

I just had my yorkies teeth cleaned last week, we do it every year im always scared about the anesthesia but she has always done great. She is 6 years old and has all her teeth and the vet said that her teeth are best she has seen in a yorkie. Do you brush her teeth.

My little gal is a little over two years old, and I have always brushed her teeth daily. She comes to expect it. Everytime she goes to the Vet, they always comment on how she never has any gum inflamation or tarter. Because I have brushed her teeth almost immediately from the start....she is use to it and doesn't ever mind.

Happy to hear your 6 year old Yorkie has all her teeth. Do you brush them, as well?

I also, only as a treat, will occassionally give my gal t/d's which litterally scrapes the tarter off a dog's teeth. With a healthy diet, brushing daily, and t/d's as a treat.....my gal also has beautiful teeth.

    Hi Stephanie

I completely understand your position...trying to decide whether to neuter and have teeth done. I have a tiny 3 1/2 lb male Yorkie. He is delicate boned and although he "thinks" he is as big as a Great Dane..I am just too scared to have him neutered. I have heard the most heartbreaking stories of Yorkies not coming through the anthesia. My vet tells me to stay off of the Yorkie sites as they are alarmists. Well...I am pretty neurotic about my beloved baby. I brush his teeth constantly (he also has two extra teeth) . He eats fine. I don;t know..maybe one day I will get the nerve to neuter him..I would prefer him to be neurtered. I know I am not much help..but I certainly do sympathize with you.
