pug pigmentary keratitis
My 5 year old pug, Maggie, has an eye ulcer caused, I think, by her digging at her eye because she is losing her eyesight and it bugs her. The vet said she has pigmentary keratitis and wants her to be on an ointment with a small amount of steroids in it for the rest of her life. She has had bad reactions in the past to steroids (seizures) and I am not comfortable about doing it again. Anyone know of a natural herb or homeopathic treatment for this? Thanks for any input. The vet says she will eventually be blind.

Hi Kathy nice to meet you. If I were you, I would take her to a Holistic Vet at least for one examination, to get their opinion and recommendations.
You can research Holistic Vets in your area on the internet... I will tell you, they will be more expensive than your regular vet, but very well worth it.
Let us know...

I had a friend who rescued a Pug . He had it also . It isageetic problem in Pugs. They had her on ophthalmic cycosporin for the rest of his life.
The problem was untreated by the rescue fortnately Carol adopted him . The first week cost her $600 in Vet bills shelter said he was 5. He was more
like 10. Carol had him for 6 years and he did quite well on the medication . His eye sight totally went the last two year she had him but he adapted very
well. They lived in an apartment so potty time was always on leash. His nose was an excellent "cane"and he manuvered around the house like he could see.

I have taken her to the only holistic vet in this area, a 45 minute drive, a couple of years ago when she was having seizures from the combination of steroids and Benedryl that the emergency vet hospital gave her. I knew she had a bad reaction to steroids but they didn't ask me before they gave them to her. shame, shame. The holist vet mainly uses homeopathy, which is OK with me but he has a reputation for not having a good "bedside manner". And it is true. And yes, he did cost more than an ordinary vet, but I had just spent a lot of money at the emergency center for her continual itching and all they did was make her have seizures.
Does the ophthalmic cycosporin have steroids in it? I think that is what her currant vet wants her on also. I do not like it if it has steroids. Thanks for the two replies. Kathy
