best dry kibble for my mini schnauzer with pancreatitis.

My schnauzer has pancreatitis and the Vet said to cut back on fat. What is the best
dry kibble I can buy. I have been researching and am really confused about all the
different brands. At the present I am home cooking her food. Ground turkey and rice
(bown or white) or chicken or fish. But I don't think she is getting all the vitamins she
needs. Has anyone else had this problem that can offer me some suggestions.
I had been feeding her Origen and Ziwi Peak but found out the Ziwiki Peak has too
    much fat. Please help.

has your Vet suggested a particular food. I have a Miniature Schnauzer who is extremely healthy with no health problems. I feed the ORGANIC NATURE'S BEST Lamb and Brown Rice Dinner for Adult dogs...it is Science Diet...but not the regular Science Diet. I also add in Enzymes in her two meals per day, as well as supplement with canned w/d wet food (low fat) on occassion. She also gets fresh veggies at times.

Please check out some of my other posts whereas I went into detail about these foods.

My Schipperke has Pancreatitis too and I feed her Natural Balance Original Ultra Reduced Calorie Formula which has 3% fat and also add Natural Balance Turkey roll, she has been doing very well on it.

Thank you. I talked to a lady yesterday at Pet Smart and she suggested the Low Fat or Weight Loss Science Diet, but she was a representative of Science Diet and
I have heard and read so much about Science Diet being bad, that I did not buy it. Thank you again for your comments, I will check it out.

I talked with one of our local vets who said that unless your dog had some special health issues that I should check the ingredient lists of the very good store brands and other pet store brands. I took a list of the types of ingredients recommended by good a Yorkie book, the vet, and Sharda Baker's web-site issue on dog foods. I found that one 'highly noted brand' that used to be a pet store's exclusive sales brand had 'beet pulp' as a filler--this in NOT good for dogs! I ended-up getting the Purinea One for puppies--Lamb & brown rice brand. He seems to be very healthy. I also add a 1/4 tsp of oil or sunflower oil to his food and stir it together; it is good for his hair & skin.

Science Diet is good, IF it is Nature's Best, not the original.

Also....Check ingredients list on Natural Balance, as some have sugar listed as an ingredients.

Doridean: Did the vet tell you how much fat your schnauzer should have? Or what was too much fat??

No, he did not say how much. Said to cut it back as much as possible. I did buy Natural Balance Ultra Reduced Calorie. It
has 6 per cent minimum. She seems to like it but I am still feeding her mostly rice and chicken or turkey. Found some
Smkehouse 100 percent natural chicken chips treats that only have 2 percent fat. She is feeling much better but I do not
want her to get sick again, so any suggestions anyone has will be appriceiatd. Thank you.

I will look at the ORGANIC NATURE'S BEST,but the man at the Pet Food Store I was at said that the Natural Balance had the lowest
fat of what he had. It only has 16.5% protien so I do not know if she needs more protein or not. Thanks for your comments
I will see what the Vet thinks and also keep on researching. Inever knew there was so much in finding a good dog food.

Doridean- I could not get an answer from my vet or any local vet I called to see how much fat a mini schnauzer should have. Im feeding mine blue buffalo the lamb and rice. It has 12%fat i think. but has the garlic. Which she likes but seems like she belches it alot. Going to change but sure. Hopefully youll get some advice from your vet that will help.
