    Dog overweight

Is there anyone who can help in sharing how to control a dog from eating too much? My dog is overweight even though she runs with me everyday.

    Hi jude09,
I feed my lab every morning, afternoon and evening but the quantity is just like dividing one meal into three servings. I feed him dog food, with a little rice, chicken/ fish (every three days). Bread as snack during training time. We have lots of fun playing together during training. Runs every morning about 30 minutes and walk in late afternoon.

    Hi Bambino,

I have a Golden and she was weighing more than my Vet wanted, she is only 3 years old, he said limit the treats and give her 1 cup in the morning and 1 cup in the evening, she has dropped 8 pounds. I also went to a Holistic food and her stools are so much less and she is just full of energy. Good Luck.

Read the labels on EVERTHING you feed your dog....Did you know that a single dog biscuit can contribute as much as an extra 100 calories per day to a dog's diet?

Managing the "Battle of the Bulge"....
    * Feed a well-balanced, vet-approved diet. If necessary, feed a calorie-restricted diet.
    * When you treat your pet, give only healthy treats. (Bread will quickly put weight on anyone, again check ingredients.)
    * Make sure your pet gets plenty of regular age-and health-appropriate exercise.
    * Don't allow your pet to have unrestricted access to food-its own or another pet's!
    * Make sure all family members are on the same page when it comes to feeding-and treating-your pet.
** Wean off of treats and instead give lot's of praise and play instead.

Check with your Vet on "Lean Treats" for your dog, and remember therer is still a limit on how many you should feed your dog per day.

Do not go by the amount the package states to feed your pet....that is always way too much. Check with your Vet on how much you should be feeding your dog. It differs with each dog.

I recently read that manufacturers are adding sugar to dog treats
Besides being empty calories, sugar makes dogs want to eat more of the treats
Smart manufacturers - if the dog eats more they sell more
The vet writing this article stated that this is a major cause of dog obesity

That's why it's best to make your own treats, if you can. Sugar is also bad because it feeds cancer cells which may be free radicals within the dogs body. I would use Stevia instead because it's a natural sweetner, but you should buy it unbleached.
