    Exclamation seperation anxiety

i was interested in sharda last email to eveyone re: crate training. i have an 11 month old cocker spaniel who suffers from seperation anxiety from time to time? i used a crate from 3month to six months of age, should i start using the crate again whilst i'm out as he can be quite destructive ie: digging up garden/carpet/cushions. does anyone have ideas/answers on this thanks:

Hi Leonie, Welcome! This is a very interesting site and I think you will find it helpful, I come here every day to see what is happening.

With your puppy being destructive, I would say yes put him in the crate while you are gone, (not all day, everyday, if you work and are gone 8/12 hours) That is a whole new issue.

My Golden is 3 and she walks right into her large plastic kennel at night and sleeps all night through, it is her safe haven, especially during thunderstorms like we had this early morning she didn't even bark.

    Good Luck.

*** Make sure your puppy/dog gets plenty of EXERCISE & GOOD QUALITY PLAY TIME with you before you leave.

*** DO NOT make your leaving a big deal.

*** Be sure to have plenty of FRESH WATER available for your dog.

*** Invest in a few INTERACTIVE TOYS. These hold treats for your dog which they have to work at to get it. EXAMPLES: HiQ Linkables / Kongs / Treat Balls / etc.....

*** If you are gone for more than a few hours at a time....PUPPY-PROOF an area inside your home by sectioning off a certain area. Make it comfy for him with his favorite toys, bed, etc....

*** I purchased CD's for my little gal entitled "Through a Dog's Ear"..... Music to Calm Your Canine Companion. I play these all the time, not just when I need to leave. Really makes a difference.
