Dog chewing on the leash
I have a 6 month old puppy, and he's very hyper. He's learned a new habit, biting on the leash. We keep telling him to stop, but doesn't listen. We've tried putting bitter apple, it doesn't do anything to stop him. I'm not sure if it's a habit, teething, or he's just bored. We try give him a toy or rahide, he's okay for a few seconds, then he's back the same as he was before. We tried changing to a new leash, but that doesn't help either. Please tell me what to do.

Hi coco,
At that 6 months of age he has to be teething and will outgrow that. But do you keep him on a leash tied in the house or does he just do this on a walk or what? What kind of dog is he? If that is him in the picture he sure is cute, a real snuggle bunny.

We keep him on the leash all the time (inside the house and out) otherwise we won't able to control "train" him. He is a Bishonpoo. No the picture in the display isn't him LOL I didn't have the time to put a picture of him yet, but will eventually.
Do you have any advise to stop him from biting on the leash. I don't know what to do. He's driving my dad crazy.

No didn't think so after I went back and read your later post.
Yes I have advice on that too, my new puppies as babies are either in a plastic kennel in my bed under the covers and when I trust them to not do any messes they are snuggled up to me and just sleep all night. I have 3 in my bed now.

I hope Sarah and MaryAnn see this , they are so good and have so much good advice to offer.
I would take that little guy to bed with me and snuggle but that is just me. Some people don't allow a puppy in the bed.
Good luck.

I agree with having a leash on Coco, but it doesn't have to be a long leash where he will bite on it.. I don't agree if he is being tied up, because this just makes him more hyper not being able to be around you. You can use anything for a leash, it doesn't have to be a true leash. the do sell small ones that are about 2-3 inches long..
I want you to try and do this for me.. since the dog is small it should not be any problems whatsoever... Put the dog on his side, hold him down with one hand firmly on his upper ribs. Hold him there until he calms down, massage his chest with your other hand. when the dog calms down and relaxes [and he will] give him a treat. do this often enough and he will get the idea that he is going to get a treat when he is 'calm'..
What you are doing is putting the dog in a submissive position. This is what the mother would do.

Hi, I have found a great video on how to stop dogs from chewing the leash. Here's the link to it: YouTube - How to stop leash biting- clicker dog training. Hope it helps! Keep us posted!

The leash, I believe Sarah is referring to, is called a "Tab Leash"...they are usually less than a foot long, but they do make a "Spring Tab" about 3 inches in length (coiled). You can find it on any website that sells dog Agility equipment. This may work as I don't think your dog will be able to get it in his mouth very comfortably. And it stretches out when you pull.
