Weird Habit from my basset hound

I have a rescued basset hound that is about 3 years old. He is the most sweet & lovable dog anyone could ask for. The only thing is that he will take a mouthful of dry dog food & hide it in the corner, behind a chair, or under a table. We leave him food & water out all day long, so it's not like he doesn't have food available. We have had him since the first part of January. Any suggestions on breaking this habit. It was funny the first time I found it, but not so cute now. I didn't know if this was because he had been let out on the side of the road or if it's a trait that is inborn. Shorty is such a sweetie & I wouldn't trade him for any other dog in the world.

Dogs do best when you feed them twice daily, once in the morning and once later in the day. Splitting the daily food intake into two meals gives the dog something to look forward to.

Most professional dog trainers are not in favor of what is known as "free feeding", such as what you are doing offering food at all times. Set meals are easier on the dog's digestive tract. If food is always out, his digestion will be working overtime, around the clock.

Set meals also send out the very clear message that you are in charge of the food. This raises your value in your dog's eyes and makes him more likely to listen to you. Give your dog 20 minutes to finish his food and then take away the remainder.

And remember - always clean your dog's bowl after use. Wash it thoroughly. Dirty bowls are unhygenic and can attract flies.
