Basset Hound
DESCRIPTION
The Basset Hound is known for their big and heavy body, their short legs and long ears. This breed excels in different types of activities such as; conformation, obedience, pack hunting, field training and tracking.
They also have a good sense of smell and have excellent hunting instincts.
They can span over 12 – 15 inches and can weigh about 50 – 65 pounds.
TEMPERAMENT
The Basset Hound is an affectionate, loving, gentle and a peaceful breed. They're naturally well-behaved and they love being with their master and family.
This breed is always friendly and mild provided that their master has established a firm role of being the pack leader.
Housebreaking can be difficult with this breed.
HEALTH AND LONGEVITY
This breed is prone to bloat which is why it's not recommended to feed your Basset Hound too much. Overeating can also make their body heavier which can affect their legs and their spine.
It's advised that you monitor your Basset Hound or feed them twice a day with little serving.
They can live for about 10 – 12 years.
CARE REQUIRED
This breed's smooth coat is easy to groom. It's advised to regularly clip The Basset's nails regularly.
They're constant shedders.
They will need plenty of exercise and daily long walks to help keep them healthy.
SUITABILITY
They're inactive indoors but can be quite active outdoors. They will do well in an apartment but it's recommended to have a medium sized yard with secured fences because the Basset tends to roam around and follow a certain smell.
They love being in a family and are good with children but shouldn't be trusted with other pet animals because of their strong hunting instincts.
